As we transition from summer to fall, temperatures are dropping while our desire to feel cozy is going up, up, up. Layering is the last thing on our mind in the summer, but once that fall chill hits (especially in the mornings), we’ll want to wrap ourselves in something warm. That’s when a robe becomes your go-to styling option, serving as the perfect extra layer both at home and outside. Robes can be light as air when made with materials like silk or satin, or toasty outerwear pieces when they’re made of materials like fleece or wool.

We love to wear robes over our Thigh Society shorties, and they pair well with our longer 17 and 21-inch lengths for extra leg coverage, especially as it gets colder. Not sure how to style a robe? Here are five materials and styles we love for fall.

Robe Styling

What is a robe?

The women’s robe category is pretty broad, but essentially a robe is a loose-fitting outer garment that wraps around the body and is typically secured with a belt or tie. Robes have had a long sartorial presence throughout history; for centuries they’ve been worn for everything from casual indoor clothing to regal ceremonial attire. Today, robes come in a wide range of lengths and materials and can be worn for a variety of occasions.

1. Silk Robe

Silk robes are synonymous with luxury and feel absolutely delightful against your skin. Their rich texture and elegant drape offer a touch of sophistication that's hard to beat. It can make you feel like a million bucks at home and is sophisticated enough to be worn outside. Silk robes make an excellent layering piece over a T-shirt, long-sleeved shirt or turtleneck, and can be worn over jeans or a skirt in the fall. A silk robe looks especially chic when you opt for a rich, autumnal hue like deep burgundy, emerald green or classic navy. The sheen of the silk catches sunlight beautifully, adding a touch of glamor to an everyday outfit. You can also opt to wear your silk robe as a dress — it looks amazing cinched at the waist with leggings and knee-high boots for a slinky look that’s casual yet stylish at the same time.

 2. Printed Kimono Robe

Printed kimono-style robes look amazing for fall with their wide sleeves and flowing silhouette bringing a touch of bohemian flair to any outfit. Kimono robes often feature intricate patterns and vibrant colors, making them great statement pieces for fall whether you’re rocking yours at home or outside of your abode. Opt for a dark blue floral print kimono robe to wear with jeans or a scarlet red floor-length number to make you feel like a diva at home. We love a bold statement kimono robe.

 3. Hooded Robe

Let’s get as warm and toasty as possible this fall and winter by wearing a hooded robe. Perfect for those chilly mornings, this type of robe offers both coverage and coziness, and the hood is a built-in hat for when your ears are cold. Whether you’re lounging at home or taking a leisurely stroll through the park, a hooded robe is the ultimate layering piece for fall. Material-wise, we love a fleece, wool or cashmere hooded robe to relax it — it’s like a warm blanket that you can also wear.

 4. Bride Robe

A bridal robe is the ultimate wedding day getting-ready outfit but can also be worn far beyond that day. Typically made from soft, luxurious materials like satin or lace, these robes can easily transition into your everyday wardrobe — just don’t get a robe that is emblazoned with “Bride” to make it a more everyday piece. (Or if you like to be reminded of your special day, rock your “Bride” robe at home — we love that for you.) To feel comfortable on your wedding day, wear a pair of comfy shorts underneath your robe to sit and move comfortably. Our Staple shorts are buttery soft and come in neutral hues like beige or halo to pair well with your bridal robe.

 5. Bathrobe

A bathrobe is a self-care and lazy Sunday essential perfect for wearing after a luxurious bath or shower while you sip your morning coffee. It’s also great to lounge around in while wearing a face mask, giving yourself a pedicure or after applying body oil (and it helps absorb the excess and not stain your couch). Choose a bathrobe made from thick, plush material like terry cloth or fleece to keep you warm on chilly days. Add some fuzzy slippers if you want to take things to the next level for the perfect spa day at home.

Whether you’re going for elegance with a silk robe, embracing coziness with a bathrobe or adding a touch of boho flair with a kimono robe, there’s a robe for every occasion. Wrap yourself in comfort and style this season — robes are not just for lounging, they’re for living.
